One of the lovely ladies that I work with had a birthday the other day and didn’t give us any warning! I love making things for people’s birthdays and would have loved to have been prepared and made a lovely gift for Mrs S. Given that she withheld her birthday from me, I figured I could be a day late on the card and gift, so that night I made her a simple little gift. Mrs S loves Jane Austen novels. She was getting the hardcover book set of all the Jane Austen books for her Birthday. I thought a bookmark was quite fitting.
I recalled a quote that I read and loved from one of the Jane Austen Novels that I thought would have been perfect for the bookmark.
“The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.”
~ Jane Austen
The supplies you will need to recreate this bookmark are;
- A piece of card approximately 7cm x 18cm
- A sheet of decorative paper
- A sheet of solid colour paper
- Ink for decorating
- Small diamantes or button etc for the centre of the flower
To make the bookmark you will need to;
Step 1. Cover the card with the decorative paper
Step 2. Hand write or print the quote off onto the colour paper. Keep the boarder of the quote to well within the dimensions of the card.
Step 3. Cut out the quote. You could use a decorative shape or even just a rectangle
Step 4. Burnish the edges of the quote paper with a complimentary ink
Step 5. Stick the quote paper onto the covered card, centre it evenly side to side but allow space at the top for the flower.
Step 6. Make the flower using the method from last week’s tutorial. Only on a much smaller scale and only using 1 layer of 6 petals and then 2 layers of 5 petals.
Step 7. Decorate the inside of the flower, I used 3 small diamantes but you could also use a small button or beads or a variety of other things.
Step 8. Stick the flower onto the top of the bookmark.
You are done!
I paired the bookmark with a simple card in co-ordinating colours and the pair is just gorgeous. I was really happy with how it turned out but most importantly Mrs S really liked it!
Do you have a quick and easy gift idea for those surprise birthdays? I think I should start stocking up on cards and small gifts for such a situation.
